Landscape Painting Workshop

Join us for five days of painting on location on the spectacular coast of Maine with instructor Mary J. Arthur BA, BFA, MFA.

This workshop is a great way to explore and experience a beautiful landscape setting while improving your painting skills and knowledge. Class runs during the week Monday – Friday with early morning demonstrations before painting. A break for lunch will provide time for critique and dialog followed by an afternoon/ evening painting. The course focuses on understanding painting on location, planning and executing smart compositions in changing light, observing nature quickly and with confidence as well as materials and techniques for successful outdoor painting. Mary will present a special topics lecture one evening, “The History and Present State of Landscape Painting on Coastal Maine”. Any medium welcome, demonstrations will be in oil. A portable easel is necessary.

Participants are encouraged to stay at the Driftwood Inn, which is a family owned inn with an ocean front location on the outermost island in Casco Bay, Maine. It has been in continuous operation and owned by the Conrad family for over 100 years. It sits on three acres with panoramic oceans views on Bailey Island and is 2.5 miles long and .5 miles wide with a variety of picturesque views. The inn has small, simple, comfortable rooms with separate shared baths. Daily boat trips are available to Portland. Book your room early for a broader choice and to see details on home cooked breakfasts and dinners. There are a few additional dining options on the island. Maryland Hall has reserved rooms for the workshop. To choose your room and make a reservation visit the Driftwood Inn website at www.thedriftwoodinnmaine.com.

Latest recommended arrival date for out-of-towners is Sunday 8/9. Time off to explore the island will be built into the schedule. Transportation, room and board are not included in the tuition. There is a direct flight from BWI to Portland, Maine (via Air Tran) for those who wish to fly and carpools to the island will be arranged as plans are made. For addition information and a suggested materials list, email Mary J. Arthur at mjart5@yahoo.com or go to her website at www.Arthurstudios.com.
